Sound Bites

I love watching his little fingers pick up his Cheerios and the look of concentration as he slowly brings it to his mouth. When he likes a particular taste he nods, rocking his body forward and back while making a "Num Num" sound. We've been slowly introducing Satchel to finger foods. We've tried 3 teething biscuits before we found the perfect one. The first one we tried was a wheat free biscuit by Earth's Best that was made from barley, but it was too soft and kept breaking off in Satchel's mouth. The second was Healthy Time's maple teething biscuit. It was hard enough and didn't break apart, but the smell was so strong that Satch still smelled like maple the following day. I love the way my baby smells...I don't want him to smell like maple. Finally we tried Healthy Time's vanilla biscuit and this one was just right.

We checked out the Gerber fruit puffs and noticed that not only did they contain a lot of sugar, but they also contained strawberries! We were surprised as strawberries are an allergen. We found that Gerber Graduates makes an apple snack that is simply freeze dried apples (no sugar) and disolve quickly in the mouth, but Satch has a hard time maneuvering them in his mouth and often gags.

One thing he's wild about is YoBaby yogurt...and of course, Cheerios.

The lovely Joan Davis (a pediatric dietician in NYC) sent me this wonderful book, "Child of Mine: Feeding with Love and Good Sense". Our beloved Rochelle Sirota, also a registered dietician...and also known as "Shellsteak" sent us a video related to the book.

I also really like, "The New Vegetarian Baby". Both books are packed with excellent information.

i am so lucky that satchel is a couple of months older than miles. your research and trial and error takes the guess work out of so much for me! i wanted to ask you about cheerios and wheat products-are you concerned about gluten intolerance? i was thinking i would wait a year to give cheerios/wheat biscuits to miles. perhaps i'm being overcautious.
i should be emailing you this! thank you for your thoughtful posts guiding me right where i want to go!

Oh yes...the wheat. We were very cautious about wheat, but Satch is going to be a year old in May and our doc felt that it was probably okay in small amounts. The biscuits do not contain any wheat. As for the cheerios..."wheat products" is the last ingredient and since he eats barely a handful of them, I think his exposure to wheat is minimal. Thank for your wonderful question! I will attach a link to the cheerios ingredients. I've missed you...

Hello my dear friend. Your post made me take a second look at the fruit puff that Nathan nibbles on. Just an FYI- the Banana puffs only contain 1gm of sugar..not sure of the other flavors.
Still, I use caution with them because he likes to pile about 10 in his mouth at one time...They may dissolve but not that quick!

Hello my dear friend.
I took notice of the Gerber fruit puff's sugar comment and immediatly went and read my label. The banana puffs only contain 1gm of sugar per serving. So I'm going to let him finish the container but will use more caution with the other flavors. Thanks for the heads up though!!

Correct, the ingredients do say 1G of sugar per serving (as do Cheerios), but the serving size of Gerber Fruit Puffs is considerably smaller than that of Cheerios.

An entire container of Gerber Fruit Puffs equals 42G and one serving size is 1/6 of that. A serving size of Cheerios is 1 cup or 30G. I believe (pardon my poor math) that would mean that Gerber Fruit Puffs contains more than double the amount of sugar that the Cheerios does.

Thanks Julie, for reminding me to be more specific with my posts :-)

*If anyone has better math skill than I and can figure this out, please post the correct ratio for me....

PS- I deleted the 4th comment because I think my sugar calculations were off (math is not my language) but I do think the above post is pretty accurate. Also to note, for those concerned about wheat introduction...Gerber Puffs list wheat as the 3rd and 4th ingredient whereas Cheerios list wheat products as the last ingredient.

*I had to use Walgreen's link for Gerber Fruit Puffs because I could not find an ingredients list anywhere on the Gerber site.

The scoop is that Gerber Fruit Puffs contain more 4 times the sugar per serving than Cheerios.
